Hero by Night paints a picture

28 Oct

Staged at the WA museum, ‘Zero2Hero’ held its 4th annual cocktail function which created awareness and raised funds for suicide prevention in Australia.

The evening was titled ‘Hero by Night’ and this year was themed upon the quote by Henry David Thoreau; “This world is but a canvas to our imagination”.

The Foyer of Hackett Hall was transformed into a blank canvas whereby artists easils, living mannequins and a caricaturist created a colourful array of artistic entertainment.

Painting emotions to light up to room

Guests were invited to participate in painting a picture of an emotion they wish to avoid which highlighted the fact that there are many emotions in life that people find it difficult to speak about. Event Manager, Ashlee Harrison shared some interesting facts about the unspoken topic of suicide in Australia as well as her own reasons for becoming involved in this worthy cause. I was shocked to learn that suicide is the leading cause of death among those under 44 in Australia and realised just how important it is to spread the word about suicide prevention and support Zero2Hero in their mission.
To find out more about Zero2Hero head to; http://www.zero2hero.com.au/

Entertainment on stage included Danni Stefantetti, DJ Peter Francis and The Fit Simmers. This talented line-up set the mood for a well spirited crowd and a well occupied dance floor!

Guests were treated to a selection of cocktail food and drinks during the evening as well as the opportunity to bid to win some amazing prizes.
All in all, the night was well organized, entertaining and definately a fun way to spend a warm Spring night in Perth whilst supporting a very worthwhile cause.

Sunshine, Sweepstakes and Style at Ascot

20 Oct
With a glorious blue-sky day on the forecast and an afternoon free for fun, we headed to Ascot for the Crown opening day.

I always enjoy the walk up to the main gates of Ascot racecourse. The gardens are beautifully manicured, the flowers are in bloom and inside the gates, a buzz of excitement awaits!

I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were no lines at the gate and no cues at the bar, just a good turn out of race-goers in good spirits celebrating a sunny day at Ascot.
Today was not only the opening day at Ascot but it was also the day whereby fashionistas adorn their best raceday outfit to compete in the MYER fashions on the field. Women around Australia work on their outfits for months in advance in order to be in the running to win some of the amazing prizes up for grabs.

This year there were many Perth entrants and it was lovely to see so many women having fun with fashion and style. In each group of lovely ladies that walked the catwalk, a few we’re selected to compete in the final line-up.

The panel of judges included amazing Perth designer Aurelio Costarella, Myer ambassador Laura Dundovic, Kylie Radford of Morrison and last year’s WA finalist, Elicia Anderson. The panel also included Myer inhouse stylist Andrea Tonkin and jewelley designer Tegan Sewell of Sewellery.
They had a tough job in selecting the final few finalists who were all required to meet certain criteria to be in the running for the major prize which included;
  • A nine day trip of a lifetime for two to Melbourne to compete in the National Final at the 2012 Melbourne Cup Carnival, including flights, accommodation and a raceday hospitality package valued at $10,000
  • Myer Shopping Spree to the value of $1000
  • $700 Antler Luggage Package
With so many fabulous outfits in the line-up, the judges managed to select the runners up and the all important winner – Emma Reynolds who teamed Cue with Country Road, Mimco and Hedonism to take home the major prize! A peplum white top with black pencil skirt and belt, teamed up with lashings of fresh yellow tones was the winning combination!

After checking out all the style from Fashions on the Field, we headed to the grandstand for a glass of cool bubbles and (for those of our friends that were lucky enough) to cash in some winnings…

This day at Ascot proved to be a fantastic one….. Great atmosphere, respectful crowd, exciting racing and above all, a fabulous spectacle of fashion and style!

If you haven’t been out to Ascot for the opening day in years gone by, do plan a day out for 2013 as it really is one of the best days track-side. There are, however, many fabulous days on the upcoming 2012 calendar worth checking out at Ascot – plan your race day outfit and enjoy a day in the sun with friends!!

Crown brings a taste of Paris with Style

17 Oct

In a past life, I must have been French!

It’s the only explanation for my love of all things French…… music, Champagne, furniture, clothing, handbags, perfume, the language and food…. Especially the food!

My first memories of French cuisine in Perth were that of Frenchy’s restaurant in South Perth, where many special occasions were celebrated with Escargot or mussels doused in Garlic and enjoyed with buttery baguettes. Dessert was always a feast of warm profiteroles smothered in hot chocolate sauce -whilst delicious, we would find by the end of the evening we were all ‘elegantly sufficiently FULL!’

Over the years my taste for French food has evolved. Whilst I love any excuse to whip up a creme brûlée or cherry clafoutis at home, I ultimately love dining out at a French restaurant and leave the ‘palette mastery’ to the pro’s!

Friday night just gone, I experienced the newest French Bistro in Perth, ‘ Bistro Guillaume’.
Opening at Crown Perth, Bistro Guillaume features the cuisine of acclaimed French chef Guillaume Brahimi and follows the success of the original which first opened at the Crown in Melbourne.

With a dinner reservation at Bistro Guillaume at 2030 and a clear Spring night on the forecast, we headed in early to check out the sexy new appeal that Crown has bought to Perth.

Not only has Crown added a heap of new, world reknown resturants and bars to it’s list of attractions but it is also aesthetically appealing with landscaping and renovations updating its tired facade. In the past, Burswood has not been my destination of choice when heading for a meal or a night out as it was in need of some TLC and a bit of excitement!
However, with new additions such as Nobu, Rockpool and Bistro Guillaume and with its fresh new look, I was happy to be spending an evening here.

A pre-dinner drink was enjoyed at  ‘The Merrywell’ bar which seemed like the place to be on this bustling Friday night. Whilst it was busy, the atmosphere remained chilled out and the service, faultless…. Definatley worth a return visit! (I particularly loved the look of their cocktails served in jars and their ‘grazing’ menu items that were being delivered to the various tables dotted throughout the premise).

Following a drink at The Merrywell, we headed onto Bistro Guillaume for our dinner reservation.
Here, we were pleasantly surprised by the fresh new look that the poolside restaurant now had.
Vibrant apple green with black and white decor created a fun yet effortlessly sophisticated look. In comparison to the venue it once was, Bistro Guillaume was brightly lit and had a buzz no matter where in the restaurant you were seated.
We were shown to a half circular booth where we spent the evening in Culinary delight, tasting all the fine food from the creations of Guillaume Brahimi.

On our table was the Snapper fillet w cavolo Nero, Chinese cabbage and sauce verge ….. (nothing but delicious) as well as the Pork Belly w lentils, green apples and tarragon vinaigrette.

For dessert, the pear tart w hot chocolate sauce won over the creme caramel and strawberry tart…….. Although this was an incredibly tough decision and I am planning to revisit Bistro Guillaume in the not too distant future just to try the desserts that I didn’t try!!
If I could bottle some of the flavours on the plate at Bistro Guillaume, I would love to take it home!
If I could bottle the beautiful French accent our waitress had on Friday evening and listen to it like a song, I would do that too!

Until I work out how to bottle all the beautiful French flavours and sounds, I’ll keep my French cookbook handy and make sure I don’t miss my French language class!!

Thoroughly recommend a night out at the new Crown Perth and if you are a lover of French style as I am, definately worth booking in advance for Bistro Guillaume!

Racing with style and fun!!

12 Oct

Ever since I was a little girl I’ve loved a day at Ascot!

I grew up with families who lives and breathed racing and even back then I was drawn to the glamour and excitement. My uncle was the judge at Ascot and my dad loved a punt, so on the occasional family day I remember being there with Dad soaking in the trackside fashion. Women were dressed from head to toe in outfits that were stunning….and I used to go home dreaming about shoes and hats that were colour co-ordinated with bags! Seriously!

So with the upcoming Spring Racing carnival, I couldn’t wait to share with you a taste of the Ascot ‘race day’ experience!

The carnival kicks off in Perth on October 20 with the Crown Perth Opening at Ascot. This is one of the more glamourous days on the calendar as it features the Myer Fashions on the Field parade whereby race-goers can enter on the day to be on the running for some fabulous prizes.

Those with an eye for Fashion, work on co-ordinating outfits for months in advance, so it is quite a spectacle for those who love racing fashion!

Tanya Cull is the Sponsorship and Promotions Coordinator at Perth Racing and she gave Stylewa an insight into Spring Racing at Ascot…….

Stylewa – The upcoming Spring Racing Carnival at Ascot is upon us. The first key date for the diary is the Crown Perth Opening Day at Ascot on 20 October, what can people expect from this exciting day out?

The festival kicks off with Crown Perth Opening Day at Ascot showcasing all of the fun and excitement of spring racing and featuring the Myer Fashions on the Field State Final. Register on the day for this runway spectacle and showcase your raceday look for a chance to win fantastic prizes.

The best thoroughbreds will be returning to Ascot for the 9 race programme with WA’s leading jockeys ready to get their campaign off to a winning start. It’s just another reason to be trackside for an afternoon of raceday excitement at Ascot.

Stylewa – The Myer WA Fashion on the Fields is held on this special Raceday whereby entrants can register on the day for their chance to win some fantastic prizes…. What are some ‘must haves’ for those who may considering entering this event on the day?

An expression of your own sense of racing style. Focus on the appropriateness of the outfit for the raceday and your individual personality

A demonstration of your understanding of the current fashion trends. A key trend for the spring summer season is “colour and print clash” it’s all about bold, bright colours!

Attention to detail with accessories and millinery.

Person presentation – superior grooming and deportment are essential!

Suitability and appropriateness of the outfit for the climate

Stylewa – What are the fashion trends that people can expect from the 2012 Spring racing calendar and what are some basic ‘do’s and don’ts’ for guys and girls attending Ascot on certain racedays?

For the ladies

Bold Brights – Kick start your spring wardrobe with a bold statement of explosive colour. This new season look of bold brights is the perfect eye catcher for a sun soaked day at Ascot

Soft Pastels – Soft and sexy come together with a versatile palette of refreshing pastels. This smart elegant look brings together popular appeal of refined race day glamour

Psychedelic & Clashing Prints – Nothing screams confidence on the catwalk like this seasons mix and mismatch of bold prints and psychedelic fabrics. It’s the trending style from some of Australia’s favourite designers

Texture – Vintage inspired lace and fine metallic detail ooze class as designers create the latest collections of race wear. The beautiful detail of these textured fabrics give this season’s look a stunning new edge

For the guys

Colour Hits – Spectacular colour clashes are a man’s domain too and what better opportunity for braving the colour craze than a day at Ascot? Be brave, mix and match a look that only you can own

Stripes and Checks – Quality dress shorts are the smart answer to WA’s hottest summer fashion. Teamed with bold, coloured shoes this look is finished off with old school stripes and checks. Feel good and look good with this Ascot wardrobe tip!

Effortlessly Chic – Remember guys, effortless doesn’t mean no effort! It means styling an outfit with simple wardrobe essentials. Try a clean smart t-shirt with relaxed chinos and smarten up the look with a nice jacket. Roll up your cuffs and throw on your shoes and you are away!

Stylewa – If you were going to plan a stylish day out at Ascot… Where would you start? (ie should we book a restaurant? Go gen admin? Marquee? Etc)

There are options to suit everyone’s style and budget – visit perthracing.com.au for all of the raceday options!

George Street secret

6 Oct

Some time ago, a friend with a common passion for fashion, pointed me in the direction of George Street, East Fremantle.

She was correct in thinking that it was a place I would enjoy visiting. It has a small, but quality collection of fashion boutiques, giftware and coffee shops and it is one street that has become a favourite destination of mine.

I always manage to score a great cup of coffee and get a fix of some amazing labels at the couple of beautiful boutiques that line the street……. and if I head there with my boys, there is even a unique park that manages to satisfy their bursting energy and put a smile on their face!!

So today with blue skies on the forecast, and a 10am coffee date with 1 Imby, 1 Ashe and 1 very new baby Parker….. George Street was our destination.

Hubbles Yard is a quiet little corner cafe that never disappoints for a great coffee and some home-style food. Coffee, tea and a couple of sweet slices were on our table this morning and with the the sun streaming in and great company, it was the perfect place to be on this Saturday morning!

Along George Street you'll also find a fantastic delicatessan that does coffee, Limones for beautiful meals and The Wine store if you fancy a tipple!

Following morning tea, always comes a browse of the gorgeous gift shops. You will never fail to find a beautiful gift in any of these stores with their selection of giftware being of a high quality. I particularly love to give the gift of a scented candle, my favourites are Voluspa and Glass House and these are stocked at a few of the George Street stores and boutiques.

Pottery, leather goods, jewellery art and children's wear are among other unique gifts you'll find among the shops of George Street.

If you haven't yet ventured to George Street in East Fremantle, it is worth a visit. It's a quiet street that has a welcoming vibe and no matter what you're into, you are bound to find something that pleases your senses and warms your soul.

Take someone you love for a visit, or find your happy place in a quiet Street that is – George Street, East Fremantle!!

Sophia’s got WA style in the BOX!

2 Oct

For those of you who don't know about Box – Let me share it with you…

Box magazine is a lifestyle publication that makes any coffee table, ever so chic!

Featuring exclusive lifestyle and travel, high-end fashion, art, food and wine, this magazine ticks all the boxes when it comes to style!

But it's what's inside Box that makes it so unique. Inside Box you'll find a whole lot of heart! With 100% of all subscription sales being directly donated to children's charities, this magazine warms the hearts of those who need it most!

The talented lady behind the Box is Sophia Barbagallo. Sophia is the General Manager of Box magazine and there is more to this GM than a just a pretty face! She is passionate about her work, gives her time generously and loves to have fun!

Stylewa spent some time finding out more about Sophia's world of Box!

* * * * * *

Stylewa – Sophia, you are the General Manager of Box magazine, how long have you been doing this role and what do you love about your job? I am the GM of ToyBox International. I LOVE this role and have been in it now for just over six years. It is so rewarding to be able to deliver grants to help local, sick and disadvantaged kids – quite addictive in fact! This role allows me to do this warm fuzzy stuff – as well as keep a foot in the fashion world, being so closely linked with Box Magazine. Our offices are all under one roof together and we are a small team that really help each other however we can with what is on the go.

Stylewa- Box Magazine carries the phrase; “Box Magazine. It's about Luxury, it's about pleasure, it's about enjoying yourself”……….. What do you believe sets Box magazine apart from other lifestyle magazines?

I believe the main aspect that sets Box Magazine apart from other publications full stop is that it donates 100% of the profits from every subscription sale to help kids in need. It is also one of the few that is truly uni-sex and has an incredibly targeted audience through it’s corporate gifting distribution strategy.

Stylewa – I personally love the level of luxury that this magazine has…… It allows readers to escape from everyday and sets the benchmark for style in WA. Describe how you would spend a day 'in style' in WA if you had an endless budget….?

Fun! I would definitely order up some of that amazing WA sunshine and hit up Rottnest with my closest friends on a Sunseeker motor yacht. Love Summer and being out on the water.

Stylewa – Box Magazine raises funds for ToyBox International, a charitable trust that raises funds for special needs children around Australia.
100% of magazine subscription sales go to filling specific grants for children in need and 3 of these grants are featured in each edition. How did the union between Box magazine and ToyBox International come about?

Box Magazine was originally started by Troy as a newsletter for Variety. He came up with the concept to create a ‘sexier’ newsletter, that people who would not normally pick up a charity newsletter would pick it up, enjoy it’s contents and at the same time see the three pages of Variety updates, hopefully encouraging them to give back in their local community.
ToyBox was started soon after as an umbrella charity, to allow grants to be filled with any reputable, Australian children’s charity. This came about when we looked to raise more funds from Australia’s corporate world and they had already chosen a children’s charity to support for that year. ToyBox doesn’t discriminate – as long as we are assisting kids in need – that is what is important. ToyBox works with numerous charities nationally including Variety still, identifying specific grants they need filled for kids and then filling those grants.
We still today profile three grants every issue, that have been filled thanks to subscription sales.

Stylewa – Has working with ToyBox International affected your outlook on life?

Probably. You think growing up that you know about how hard some families have it, but when you come face to face with them it definitely puts everything into perspective.

Stylewa – Apart from subscribing to Box magazine, how can people contribute to this very worthy charity? (ie are there upcoming events people can attend to raise funds?)

ToyBox runs a number of fundraising events through the year alongside Pink Tank Events. This includes the Royal Queensbury Corporate Championship boxing event each May and our upcoming event Sounds Like Summer on the Matilda Bay foreshore this October. All the WA Miss Universe contestants also get the opportunity to do hands on work with ToyBox kids and fundraise for grants each year.
Donations can also be made directly at
http://www.toyboxinternational.org/get-involved/how-to-get-involved/

Stylewa – You are not only the GM for Box magazine but you are also involved with ToyBox International, Miss Universe Contests in WA and have an athletic background (with boxing and ballet some of your past times). With all of this under your belt, what would you say you are most proud of?
One of the things I love most is working with the Miss Universe contestants. They start so shy and by the end of the program have the most amazing confidence and a real desire to get out there and achieve their dreams. They are living better lives, staying fit and healthy and have a clear plan to set themselves up to achieve more in life. Seeing them change through doing the charity work too is amazing, can see everything falling into perspective for them. Those first years out of high school are really hard, this helps them to gain direction and passion. Seeing this change is definitely a highlight for me.

Stylewa – How would you describe your style?

Simple and feminine.

Stylewa – What is in store for Sophia Barbagallo and Box Magazine in the future?

We are in the middle of a big expansion with the magazine called Vault521, which engages just 521 corporate Australian businesses in an exciting corporate gifting and communication program. Fully subscribed it will raise $2million per annum for ToyBox kids. So keeping ourselves very busy with this at the moment. Exciting times.

Sophia, thank you for your time with Stylewa… We look forward to seeing your style with each edition of Box Magazine in the future!!

Stylewa
