Ae’lkemi – “Let there be light!”

11 Sep

Ae'lkemi's designer Alvin Fernandez is one man I am in complete admiration of. His work is always truly an artform that has been put together with total respect for a woman's figure. His designs are simply stunning and his collections have made it to the catwalks of New York, Milan, Berlin and of course, Australia.

With Ae'lkemi set to impress at the upcoming Perth Fashion Festival in their showcase event, 'Lumiere', Stylewa has been lucky enough to steal some time with Alvin Fernandez to find find out more about the stunning label.

Stylewa- What Motivated you to start your own label here in WA and where did the name Ae'kemi come from?

Ae'lkemi has been established for 10 years. Initially the business was operated from home before moving into our Claremont boutique, 5 years ago?

The name came about after watching a music show on the SBS. The show featured a band by the name of 'alchemy' (of that spelling) and after looking it's meaning up in the dictionary, it was fitting for my label with the definition being 'a medieval chemistry- to turn a raw material into something beautiful.' So it was very fitting for my label, although Ae'lkemi is the phonetic way of spelling the word.

Stylewa- What inspired the SS12/13 collection?

The silhouette has been my inspiration for this collection with long and lean lines. I focused on volume placement and layering with the addition of embellishment. I have focused on beaded work and colours incorporating bright tangerines, navy and anything that sparkles -golds and metallics!

Stylewa- What can people expect to see from Ae'lkemi at this years PFF?

For the second year in a row we have worked with the talented David Brittian to put together our parade. We aim to 'present' the collection to our audience and will have some of our couture peices on show. The feel of the evening will be somewhat like an epic movie. One on the darker side that has a moody, gothic yet romantic feel.

Stylewa- Tell us how the theme of Lumiere was decided?

With a focus on “let there be light!”, the theme Lumiere seemed to fit the collection whereby the peices show a 'lightness in the dark'. There is a juxtaposition in the texture of the pieces and so the name Lumiere became the name of our event.

Stylewa- What do you love about the Perth Fashion Festival?

Being able to share our collection with fans and supporters of Ae'lkemi! It's great to be able to show our work to our peers and others in the industry.

Stylewa- Who are you style inspirations?

Balenciaga, Christian Dior, anything from the 1950's with a classic, romantic feel. I am inspired by classic shapes with a contemporary, modern twist.

Stylewa- Which celebrities do you feel honoured to have designed for?

I don't look at my clients as celebrities as such, rather I feel happy to dress anyone that walks through my door….

Alvin Fernandez, your work is exceptional and I think Ae'lkemi is inspirational. Thank you for sharing your world with Stylewa and we can't wait to witness the sparkle that is…..Lumiere!

Colour your world with a visit to Linneys

1 Sep

The first day of Spring saw Linneys ablaze with colour as it unveiled its latest botanical-inspired collection.
The exhibition was opened in style and guests where treated to a morning full of colourful blooms and exquisite jewellery pieces to admire.

Alan Linney, who has a love for gardening and seasonal blooms, has designed a collection of seven custom jewellery pieces which were used as inspiration for the floral creations.
Some of WA’s leading florists were assigned to each of the seven pieces and their floral interpretations were truly stunning!!

A few of my favourite florists contributed to the exhibition, Devine Flowers, Funky Bunches and Flowers in Bloom and…… (actually they are all amazing!!) and guests attending the exhibition were asked to vote to determine the ‘People’s Choice’ in floral design. Deciding my favourite was difficult and the final votes are tallied toward the end of the exhibition.

The exhibition is open to the public from September 3-8 at 37 Rockeby Road, Subiaco and is a must see for all of you that love flowers and fine jewellery!!!!

So on the first day of Spring, I was in heaven with the morning spent in Linneys and surrounded by blooms as far as the eye could see………….what more could a girl ask for!!
(ok chocolates and champagne usually get a mention but who needs them when you have Linneys jewellery and flowers!)

To experience the full beauty of these images, plan your visit to Linneys for this amazing exhibit.

In the meantime, enjoy your first day of Spring on Saturday and I hope you find some inspiration in these things I love to do in Spring-

1. Spend time outdoors – whenever the sun is shining, go outside and breath in some warm spring air (mind you if you get hay fever – stay away from this one!)

2. Bake something with seasonal produce – we have some amazing fresh produce in WA…..fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses and seafood – now is your time to bake – up a storm

3. Fill your house with fresh flowers – do a trip to your local florist, flower market or your own garden and find happiness in a bunch of blooms – you deserve it.

4. Have a bath, light some candles and chill……..spring is a busy month and you’ll need to be rejuvinated for all the excitement that awaits.

7. Head to a cafe on the coast and enjoy brunch (my favourites right now are the Pickled and Naked Fig and Barchetta).

8. Read a good book

9. Show your loved ones how much you love them! (anything Gucci works for me!!)

9. Turn up your radio and dance………..life is meant to be fun!

Happy Spring!! x

Mandurah’s hosts a sell out Tea Party for the BCNA

27 Aug
Mandurah put on spectacular weather yesterday for the second annual MOM’s tea party which is an event held in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia.
M on the Point played host to the fundraiser which was a sell out for the second year running. The venue was perfect for an afternoon of style and BCNA Pink lady cut outs were dotted along the waterfront which not only looked stunning but created awareness to people for miles right along the marina.
A high-spirited crowed arrived at the venue, wearing some spectacular fascinators to fit with the ‘mad hatters’ style tea party. The Mums of Mandurah (MOM inc) is a community group established to ‘connect, support, inform, inspire and empower’ and they hold events like this one to raise funds for benefits like the BCNA.
Upon entry we were offered to purchase a pink lady balloon which was an entry ticket to a raffle where some fantastic prizes were up for grabs. Both the raffle and the live auction raised funds for BCNA and the prizes were contributed by local business and artists. Some of the fabulous items included; a dress by George, a handcrafted fascinator by Cher Renea Milliner, a weekender at the Arrunda B&B in Yallingup, a Miglio Designer Jewelery piece and a framed Limited Edition Print by Emma Blyth.
With a room filled with pink balloons and the champagne flowing, the room had a celebratory vibe  which continued throughout the afternoon.
Guests were treated to delectable canapes and wines whilst enjoying a stunning fashion parade put on by Beez Neez Designer Boutique.
The speakers for the afternoon gave their own personal experiences of living with Breast Cancer and with inspirational stories, they reinforced to guests the importance of supporting such a worthwhile charity.
The Breast Cancer Network Australia is the leading national organisation to raise and grant funds for breast cancer research with the aim of achieving prevention and cure of breast cancer. They create awareness in our community and support and inform women and families about breast cancer.
Guests were invited to write a message of hope on a card which they could then hang from one of the pink lady figures dotted around the venue.
The event was a fantastic way to raise awareness for BCNA whilst putting on a fabulous afternoon of glamour and style!!
I was honoured to attend the 2012 MOM’s tea party and would recommend you to buy your tickets early for next year’s event! The tickets will again sell out as this party is proving to be a popular one!
Diary date –
Saturday 6 October at the PCEC
Supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Bookings www.momenumwf.com.au

Costarella rocks East Perth for a day!

23 Aug

From years gone by – I know never to sleep in on the day of a Costarella sale!
This year was definitely no exception!! With doors opening at 9am the floods of fashionable people sorted through the racks on a mission to find their hot item (or 10 items).

The racks were stocked with sizes from zero up and everyone seemed to be walking out with gorgeous garments and a smile from ear to ear!
The more I looked, the more I wanted to try on and so I happily spent a good hour or so in change room bliss trying to decide what I can leave in the store!!
I would have stayed longer if I didn’t hear someone mention the words ‘parking inspectors’…………oh no!! Panic set in and the thought of paying East Perth shire the money I was about to use for a dress was mortifying.

After a quick dash to the meter, I was back in and walking out with my 2 gorgeous pieces  –  thankyou Costarella!

Aurelio Costarella’s warehouse sale – 9am-6pm Today (Thurs 23 August) – – There is still time to head in and be a part of the vibe!! But if you do miss out – remember to set your alarm for the next one – it’s worth it! x

The PFF website also went live into cyberspace yesterday where the full line up of designers and events were listed. Whilst it was a long, much-anticipated wait for the website to show off its wares – it was definitely worth the wait!!

Find the full line up of events here;  http://www.perthfashionfestival.com.au/events

Perth Fashion Festival is now in its 14th year and every year I get more and more excited about it coming around…… it’s like a week of Christmas!
The event calendar is like my form guide and I sit and work out the week and how I can attend as many events as I possibly can around other commitments.
Why do I love it so much?
1. It is a feast for the creative eye with the best of our Australian designers showing off their latest work.
2. It attracts the most beautifully spirited crowd who are there to get their fix of the fashion world whilst enjoying the buzz of fashion, music, artists, media, photographers and more.
3. It is my excuse to put on something special and enjoy time with friends.
4. It is my excuse to get my hands on an amazing outfit or two (just in time for the Spring Racing Carnival)!!

So make sure you put the week of 19-25 September on your calendar and stay tuned to Stylewa for all things style from the PFF!!
